Finding Kate Rowan’s voice

Two series in, how a Leeds accent and a borrowed coat became a detective. Kate Rowan came from my mum’s side of the family: practical, dry and slow to raise her voice. I found her walk in a second-hand wax jacket that the costume team let me keep through prep. On set we shoot out of order, so I keep a notebook of where Rowan is emotionally in every scene, with one word at the top of each page.
